We are still having to deal with this crap. My lawyer has been going back and forth with the insurance (State Farm) and the providers.

Got a bill from the hospital. They wanted $14,338 dollars for their 3 or 4 hrs of work. Hell, it was a CT scan and a morphine shot. Nothing else. Anyway. Insurance decided to pay some of it. While the hospital expected me to pay $14,338, they only expected State Farm to pay $4198.37. The math works out to a $10,200 discount for State Farm but they wanted me to pay the full amount. State Farm only paid $3,056 and the hospital still wants $1,082 from me. My lawyer is going to try and negotiate that down farther but what ever they settle on will come out of the settlement.

Bottom line is the HC in this country is FUBAR. $14k? If I did not have insurance they would be sucking on that bill for a long time. No way in hell I would pay it.

I despise this entire process.

To add insult to injury, this hospital is a "faith based" corporation. I guess their god wants them to phk over their patients. Gotta love it.

I’m a little bit shocked at the discount that Medicare is able to obtain on my behalf.

I don't see it as a discount. I thinks the actual notice of services rendered. The higher price is just some made up BS that they use to soak people who have no heth care. It's obscene and should be illegal.

That was sort of the point I was getting at. The amount of compensation that Medicare is able to insist on is indicative of true cost.

State Farm just got a 6.6 % increase in their rates i California .

We've never had an Insurance Commissioner who wasn't also an employee or ex employee of the insurance industry ~ every time they ask for a rate raise it's automatically approved .

Insurance rates have skyrocketed everywhere, and across all providers as far as I can tell. Ours has increased about 20% over the last year or two. Our agent is a very close friend and has mentioned that a lot of it is due to the used car market and supply chain. Higher value cars take more to write off, therefore thresholds have increased (and payouts increased), as well as claim payouts for total loss. Its all chain reaction, but I am sure the CEOs are not struggling to put food on the table.

I've worked in healthcare finance my entire career (on the hospital side) and the way things are billed is a direct function of how they are paid. If we need to get a dollar out of an insurer then we need to bill more than that. The methodology for getting paid is needlessly but incredibly complex and requires high administrative costs. Hospitals in general are a very low margin business during good years, 2-5%, and money losers in bad years like the last three years. Medicare, Medicaid and cash (no insurance and almost always written off as charity care) patients all reimburse less than our costs ( medicare is sometimes close to breakeven). Commercial insurers reimburse much better. There are some for profit places like HCA that make more but they have a very different business model than your community hospital.
