The remaining big one showed up today. This one will not be picked up. I think trying to trap it is a waste of time. It is going to trash my wife's vegetable garden when it comes in. It may be Mossberg time.

Thanks Tom. Today I noticed several more in someone's yard a few blocks away. Then I realized it would be fruitless to deal with them. I will just have to fence them out.

I found a large group in a park near by with young ones so they are multiplying. I'm going to a city council meeting next week and try to explain how prudent it would be to address the problem now rather than waiting.

Unfortunately, our 15 year old poodle would not be much help. We are going to fence sensitive areas. We already need to fence for deer. Doing some research, many citys have/are dealing with rabbit issues.

Never, ever, pick up your rabbit by the ears or scruff of the neck. You’ll hurt them and can cause permanent damage.
You want your bunny to be well supported and held firmly, which helps them feel safe.

Rabbits should not be picked up by the “scruff” or ears, for that matter. Cats have a scruff.

Picking them up by their neck, ears, legs, etc will injure them.

They should be held cradled, supporting their spine, and close to your torso, with legs sticking out so they can’t kick away from you and are just kicking at the air.

They will stop kicking after a moment and become passive.

I catch rabbits with an exercise pen used as fencing to corral them. Often they’ll hide under a car. Surround the car with several latched together x pens or other fencing and grab it.

Havahart cat sized traps are also effective.

Domestic rabbits do not become feral like a cat.

Once you pick them up and hold them securely they will stop bucking and go limp.

Rabbits do not have sharp claws/nails. They can scratch but their nails are not sharp like a cat’s. Their nails are more like a dog’s.

Their teeth are sharp but they seldom bite.

They are prey animals. Their primary method of defense is escape.

It’s usually difficult to just walk up and grab them but I have surprised bunnies several times by appearing disinterested.
If they have been previously chased, they’re wary.

Rabbits are the 3rd most popular pet, after dogs and cats.

I’m surprised the shelter won’t help.

Thanks for the info. I am holding my breath the city will address the problem. As I suspected and read on line 2 camps are forming-the "leave them alone-their cute" camp and the "they are a PITA" camp. Some people are feeding them. Their reign seems to be expanding. Now a few have showed up at our other house 1/3 mile away from the main encampment. The city gave it to the police dept to address. I have no answer to my request for a update. I will be at the next council meeting unless some progress seems to be made. This is a small town of 3000 with limited resources so it will be interesting to see how fast they act.

Unfortunately, the shelter will not take rabbits. Nobody will take them. There is only one way for them to leave. I need a hit man.

So the city has washed it hands of the rabbit problem. To many people did not want them trapped. The city will lend me a trap and bait. They did not suggest what to do with the rabbit if I catch one.

List of rabbit rescue orgs. I bet some will help catch them and take them off your hands.
