Assad's grange sale.......

CNN got into the garage and was showing off the cars. Mostly new ones. It looked like a used car lot in Beverly Hills.

There were about seven or eight classics. I saw two fifties Caddies but there were clearly two Mercedes 600s, one of which was a Pullman. I could not see the other one.

These look to be well maintained and are bound to come up for sale sooner or later. So start saving now!

And...... Mercedes 600s seem to be popular with dictators. Years ago I was in Dallas picking up parts at a dealer and they had one in the shop. It, too, was a black Pullman. I was told it once belonged to Ida Amin.

Back in perhaps 1970 I had to travel to a small town in Texas called Liberty Hill. It was so small it still had a telephone exchange with with crank telephones. I don't think the population was more than a few hundred. Today it is a real city.

Night time came and I asked my host in a joking way where was the best place to go to (that would have been in Austin, about twenty miles away) and he said LaGrange. Then he proceeded to tell me how he went there all the time and how great it was and how nice Miss Edna was.

Then his wife came in and asked if we were going to LaGrange or perhaps to Austin. Apparently he went there a lot. And it seemed to be an acceptable thing to do among the folks that lived in Liberty Hill.

As it was we stayed in and watched something on TV. So this is not much of a story, but it's as close as I ever got to the place.

The 600 is my all time favorite MB, possibly my favorite car of all time.

Only the w123 240D exceeds it in simplicity and ease of maintenance...

I'll take my 600 in short-wheel base form, black-on-black, and ditch the whitewalls for a badly-needed increase in gravitas.

I remember there was a guy named Karl Middelhauve who took a 600 and converted it into a distinguished-looking two-door coupe. That was a car that screamed old money...

The place was nicknamed 'The Chicken Ranch' because during the depression guys from Texas A and M, which is not far from there, would bring chickens to trade for, uh, goodies.

Here is the two-door conversion which I referenced earlier - I would have painted it black...

Here is another coupe with the 6.3. Would be a nice color for the 600 coupé as well. Pininfarina used this one off design later for the RR Camargue, although RR and Pininfarina never admitted it.
