Rolls Royce with 9L V-16 engine

Apparently they made 3 or 4 prototypes, one used in a movie. The specs on the engine are a bit mind numbing. I think it would be cool to have one on the autobahn and open it up.

Quote:
To date, unlike the M70-derived engine of the E32 Goldfisch, very little is known about the V16 of the 100EX. Just a few details exist on the Internet, and they describe a 9.0-liter V16 (likely based on the period N73) with twin-cam heads driving a total of 64 valves. Output is quoted as 770 horsepower at 5,900 rpm, with an astonishing 1,100 pound-feet of torque arriving at 2,900. Performance figures don’t exist, but a six-speed automatic transmission—the technology of the era—was used, and the 100EX measured over 220 inches in length. Compared to the 6.7-liter SOHC, 32-valve Goldfisch engine, which produced just over 400 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque, enough to propel a long wheelbase E32 7 Series to 175 mph, the Rolls-Royce V16 represented another realm of performance—too bad they were never put into production.

Wow, thanks for sharing David. I'll bet that is one smooth running engine.

I want anyone tempted to perform maintenance on this vehicle to purchase 16 of the appropriate sparkplugs, lay them out on a table, and realize that the 16 plugs currently in the engine have to be removed and replaced with these...

LOL, yea no kidding. How easy they are to work on is one of my main criteria when making a purchase. Not to get off on a tangent but if you want to see a maintenance nightmare google Pratt & Whitney R-4360 engine. They have a cutaway at the National Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio. Gave me a headache just looking at it.

You people are thinking like a poor person. Anyone else who would have the money to buy a 16v Rolls has numerous cars to drive and also has people to work on the car.

It might've be a little scary to drive. Back in the mid 70s I drove two shifts in a Dodge taxi, former police cruiser with a 440. Good Lord, that car was scary fast. I just did the math, that's 7.2 L.

This made me think of an engine I read about in the 60s, a Formula1 3L H16 Developed by BRM, British Racing Rotors. I just now did a search and learned way more about it than I knew back then:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/BRM_P83
Quote:
BRM decided to hedge their bets by developing their existing 16 valve 1.5 litre V8 into a 32 valve 3 litre H16 (effectively two flat 8s one on top of the other and geared together) while also developing a new 48 valve 3 litre V12 in partnership with Harry Weslake and opt for whichever turned out to be the better powerplant.
. . . . . . .
Various crankshaft vibration problems dogged the engine from the start, and to compound matters quick-fix balancing weights attached to the crankshafts developed the unfortunate habit of detaching themselves and flying off within the engines causing several catastrophic engine failures. Each side of the engine had to have its own water radiator, fuel metering unit, distributor and water pump, with a common oil radiator. The sheer complexity of the engine led to a truly terrible record of unreliability; engine, transmission and related problems caused 27 of the powerplant's 30 retirements from 40 entries. Jackie Stewart said of the engine "it was unnecessarily large, used more fuel, carried more oil and needed more water - all of which added weight and diminished the vehicle's agility."

Never went into production but on paper Mercedes designed a W18 for the W140. That would have been something.

I think it would've been too much. A guy that used to come here, I think he called himself Swede, had an S600 he told stories about. I just looked it up to make sure my memory wasn't faulty, had a 5.5 L V12, the site I found said it would do a 12.5 second quarter mile.

Swede told stories about a guy who took one to some local quarter mile challenge track, and beat all comers with the air conditioner running. Maybe it's just me, but I think that's fast enough.

The Pagani Zonda has a 6.0 L Mercedes-Benz M120 V12. Rumor is that Pagani Zonda owners buy Mercedes R129 SL73 AMG as a spares...

Those cars might be fun to drive if you had a deserted airport to play around on. They strike me as in the Dodge Viper category. Too much torque and horsepower to be fun.

I have an odd dream car lately. I want to get a Factory Five Daytona kit, they call it the Type 65 Coupe, and somehow put a tricked out BMW M20 6 cylinder into it. There are plenty of stronger engines available. But I gather with the M20 you can get about 200-225 HP, NA and have a really reliable engine. The M20 is sort of known as being bulletproof.

The 168 stock horsepower M20 pushed my 325i car around just fine. The type 65 would weigh 400 to 500 pounds less than those cars and about 200 to 300 pounds less than if it were powered by a large Ford.

I have a '19 E450. It has a twin turbo V6 with a bit under 400HP. I have to admit it does make my right foot happy. The power delivery is just silky smooth and it definitely puts me back in my seat. If I want to pass someone, tap the flappy paddle 2 or 3 times to drop down to 6th or 7th and punch it ... off to the races we go. And this same car will cruise at 80 turning 1700rpm @ abot 28 mpg. Hard to hate this car.
