86 MB 560 SEC vs 88 BMW 325 ix

Well I'm not sure if you all remember my last topic MB vs BMW, well the same guy I was talking with is getting his Bimmer out of the shop tomorrow, and we are going to line our cars up. He has AWD and it is a manual so I'm guessing he has the advantage, and my car is heavier. He figures he will get the jump on me and stay ahead of me unless we get on the highway and he says I'll smoke him. Looking at the numbers for the 325 I would say it might be close. Any opinions?

we had a street drag racing trick back in the early sixties It requires two people in each car,if I was in the passenger seat we would pull up in left lane (lonesome back road) I would count down to three with my arm out the window bringing it down on three to signal drivers to go,with my left hand I would whack the driver of our car in the leg at two and a half count! worked every time.Run the engine up on the brake and smoke that
that lowly BMW............

Your SEC will do 0-60 in the low 7 second range.

I doubt if his bimmer will keep up with you

IF you have good tyres, and can get a good start (PRACTICE!!!), you will smoke him!

He doesn't really have the torque or power for his 4wd to give him much of an advantage, then above 10 mph it'll mean excess weight for him.

I'll say again though, PRACTICE your starts and gearchanging.

good luck!

P.S. don't do it in the rain, the 4wd will give him a boost - in fact, be sure to choose a very sticky surface, pref. black tarmac on a hot day.

hmmmm,

>both old cars, so factory figures most likely will NOT be most relevant (mech condition, mods, and driver most likely be main factors to determine probable contest outcome)

>I've driven many 500/560SEC's, some w/ very low mileage- - large-ass weight is biggest factor in poor drag (0-60mph) performance (as well as the fact that its platform is not designed/ engineered for drag racing)...some appeared to be OK performers all around and the vast majority are dog slow tired

>I've driven many 325i/is E30 BMW and owned a few too- - some are very quick (in stock form), and some are just OK....

Everything else being equal, I'd think the BMW w/ win drag to 60mph, and the SEC will win 80mph-130mph,

That's funny; my 15 year old Volvo still runs to the Car and Driver tested top speed (for a 1990 model 740T, at least). Of course, it's a well maintained example.

If the cars are in good mechanical order, you should take him. The 325iX runs 7.9 seconds 0-60 stock, however, let the small Bimmer six bog on launch and it's a dog down low. I think 560SELs ran it in 7.2 to 7.5 seconds when new, so if you hold your left foot down with the brake, and gas the car up to maybe 1500 rpms just before launch, you should get a pretty fast start.

I have to agree the BMW will probley take you right off the bat but over 50 is when the Mercedes v8 shines My 500 was about the same as my 533 except for the 90mph+ power where it could take the BMW in a heart beat.
It would be a good race get some one to tape it and post it for us

I walked away from a new Civic LX non VTEC with automatic to 60 on the highway once. Of course, lots of other machinery would, too...
