Time to fix the Six!

With our good weather approaching, I've been gung-ho on getting my TR6 into top shape for summer. Just made orders for some stuff:

-Bosch plugs
-Bosch wires
-New handbrake cables (I have to leave it in gear when I park it) and new hardware
-New radiator cap
-New throttle shaft bushings (those will be a BEAR to install)

It's got a brake pull to the right so I have to investigate that further. If a caliper is bad, I'll renew both fronts and will also get new hoses to boot. New pads will of course be in order as well.

Looks like the 300SD is going to see some down time with this weather being like it is. That's ok though, she deserves a break!

A TR6 is one of the cars I've considered owning.

Have you driven it much, yet?

Any pictures?

Paul,

Oh I've been driving the living tar out of it. This is the third TR6 I've owned. The first one was burgundy and was a garage queen. A neighbor saw it and "had to have it at any cost" (which is beyond me) so I sold it to him and bought the second one which was red. Unfortunately it was totaled (somehow I managed to escape unhurt). I was t-boned by someone in a pickup who ran a red light. So that car was written off and I finally found this current one which I bought in Michigan last summer. The drive home to Cincinnati went off with only one hitch which was the ignition switch shorting out but that was no biggie, I just hotwired it to get it started. When I got it home I fixed the problem and it's been great since. The brake pull is a new issue this spring (I think from sitting through the winter). Besides that, I haven't had a chance to go through the car really thoroughly yet aside from the initial inspection which showed that the car was exceptionally solid. I let it sit all winter and didn't touch her once due to working all the time on customer's cars so there are some issues to address shortly. Like I said, the tune-up comes first (new filters, plugs, valve adjustment, etc..) and then I'm going to tear into the brakes. The lovely thing about these cars is that parts are so inexpensive when compared to Mercedes! I can practically rebuild the entire front end of the TR for about 1/3 the cost of doing it to my 450SL which is of similar vintage. Of course the difference is that the 450SL has 170K on it and the TR has 83K on it and is already in need of front end work. I did have the subframe recall done at the MB dealership back in Cleveland two summers ago and while they were in there I had them replace all the rest of the front end components as well since there wouldn't be any additional labor because the subframe was out of the car anyways.

The TR will need a new convertible top shortly (the one on there is the original and the rear window can't be seen through anymore), so that's NOT a fun task to stretch a top by any means. But again, a new Robbins top is $280 versus $600+ for an SL top.

I will make it a point to post pics sometime when I get my digi working again (batteries are dead, go figure).

Oh, and I have to diagnose some goofy tail light/brake light maladies. Fun fun...

I love those old English cars!

Did you get the oil pressure problem taken care of? I remember my TR2 and TR3 both ran on the low side.

Darryl,

Unfortunately no, the car is running with rather low oil pressure. At cold idle, it's registering only about 50psi, hot idle about 5psi and 3,000rpm hot about 25psi.

However, it's still ticking along quite nicely! That six is a tough engine! I do plan on doing a rebuild come fall so that will be remedied. Before they took my last TR6 to the scrappy, I yanked the triple Weber 40DCOE side draft carbs off of it, so those will go on this engine once it's strong enough to handle such "intense" carburetion. For now, I'm just dealing with the Strombergs, which surprisingly are not giving too much trouble as they were rebuilt not too long ago.

Aaron,
Quick question about brit cars: I have a 1973 MGB with a terrible idle. It doesn't stay too steady (no vacuum leaks at the gaskets or on the carb body) and I can't really take it completely off cast idle for about 10 minutes, and even then I have it set to idle at just below 1500RPM.

My dizzy vacuum advance diaphragm was leaking so I pulled and plugged the line all together so that now it's only running on centrifugal mechanical advance. Would this have anything to do with my poor idle? I'm pretty sure the carbs (HIF4) are in great condition. I had them looked at and spruced up by the best (Joe Curto). Thanks for the advice.

I really like the TR6. it has such a smooth engine.

Alex

Those could all contribute to a poor idle but have you checked the bypass valves? They provide a means of limiting the high manifold depression when the engine is in the over-run position. To check them, remove the valves and close off the bypass bores.

You lost me at "have you." Sorry, I haven't really delved in to this car yet.
