Troopers, Monteros, & Pathfinders Oh My!

The girlfriend wants to buy an SUV. I personally don't like SUV's but am capable of recognizing a futile argument.

She's looking for something in the $15K range with relatively low miles (>50K). We've taken the Isuzu Trooper, Mitsu Montero, and Nissan Pathfinder for a test drive and she seems to dig the Trooper and Pathfinder.

Are there any known issues with these vehicles that anyone's aware of? Any other factors to consider as well as any other vehicle suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks all.

I would go for the pathfinder myself. they drive well, and are pretty reliable.

My friend had an 87 pathfinder he drove the crap out of, and didn't maintain, and it held up for over 100k miles with only needing basic maintenance items, brakes, shocks, tires.

Eric,

Which ones by Honda though? The passport or the CRV? The passport is just a Rodeo which neither of us like and the CRV is just a pretender. Not to knock Honda, but they just don't seem to have nything to offer. I like the Pilot but those are only available new or just about new and not likely to be in the price range.

We both seem to be leaning toward the pathfinder as well but it seems to be a little pricier.

Beware of timing belts, especially when you don't know if they have been replaced on schedule. Double beware if the timing belt also drives the water pump.

Pathfinder. for the room, performance, look, reliability. the CRV, though small, is very reliable, but lacks power.

Isuzu?

I dunno. Isuzu's have always struck me as having an extremely reliable simplicity about their design: interior and exterior. As well as being cheap, and I believe avaliable with a 5 speed. For some reason they always stick in my mind as the most simple and reliable guys of the bunch. This may not be true as I have not really researched them, but it's worth a look.

If you like the Trooper and the Pathfinder, you might want to include Acura and Infinity in your search. Acura had a rebadged Trooper with an upscale interior and Infintiy repadged the Pathfinder into the QX4. Same trucks, nicer interior, roughly the same used prices.

Good info on the Troopers. Thanks.

I wasn't sure how the Isuzu products stood up on the reliability scale, but had never heard anything bad about them.

The girlfriend and I both have something against the car like SUV's (i.e. CRV and RAV4). Our view is that if your going to get an SUV, get an SUV and not the SUV car hybrid type things. They seem like they're sort of Half A$$ed, althought the gas mileage factor is true. I think we both would probably go the Outback route before those. Her dream car is the Defender 90 so she's definitely looking for something that has "beefy" appeal, but reliability and price are an issue with that one.

The timing belt is on our checklist once we find one we're interested in.

What about the Toyota 4runner? I don't know much about them.. but they look to be as nice as a pathfinder.
