I always buy Citgo just to p*ss off the right wing...
Just kidding. I hate 7 Elevens, and those are the only Citgo outlets around here... How about QuikTrip? Good doughnuts, wide selection of everything convenience-store related, and "Top Tier" rated guaranteed gas at good prices. My station for the gasser Audi. For diesel (MBZ) I buy at the Chevron located on the nearby Indian reservation, they are 1 mile from my job, and sell diesel for 10c less per gallon than in-town Phoenix stations. Until I quit smoking, also a great place for cheap cigs. Which I miss. Still. After 2 months... sorry for the thread jack... |

i choose a fueling station based on accessibility. How far is the walk from the pump to the door? Will the clerk turn the pump on for me so i don't end up making two round trips inside the store? Is there a ramp up the curb or is the curb small, with a pole or something i can grab to climb up on the curb? Is there an incline between where the pumps are and the door? Houston Biodiesel is about perfect for all of these things. The only problem is it is way out of the way. Worth it though.

Location - convientient to work and home
Charge Card - Had it for years The location near work is a card lock industrial fueling station. It's not manned by humans. I sometimes get confused and use the off road pump by accident.

I go for price, and luckily there is a BP in my area that has Amoco diesel at 47 cetane.
But I have to take the Amex card to the booth and have it charged the traditional way. I've driven off twice in the past two weeks without paying before returning to the station! I'm just too used to paying at the pump!

Usually I buy on price. However . . .
I don't like anything about Wal-Mart, least of all the crowds. The one Stooper-Store that opened near me about two years back now has gas pumps. But almost always you have to wait in lines, and you have to walk to the store twice (first to pay, then to get your change). And the damn pumps are those cheap things that cut off too soon, either via the little automatic-delivery trigger in the pump handle or when you pump manually. With that much annoyance, and Chevron being only .02 more per gallon, I'll hit Chevron, thanks. .

I use a Shell gas station by my house because of price, cleanliness of the rest rooms and customer service, the Muslims who run it are very kind and helpful.

I used to always use Sunoco because of their 94 octane premium. When gas prices passed $3.00 they lowered their prices and their octane

I use the Hess down the road. Close, usually cheapest, and I read that they buy all of their crude from this continent.
If I am near a particular pair of Sarasota BP/Amoco stations (across from the Benz dealer) I get gas there, as they usually have a price war going on.

I do have a question about the article that you posted, Botnst. It claims that, "like lead," sulpher is a pollutant. This is really the case? I had thought that the sulpher, like lead, killed the newest pollution control devices rather than directly causing a problem. Also, wasn't lead deliberately added to fuel, whereas sulpher must be removed? Or is my memory yet again failing me. |

If I visit a "gas station" at all it is the one in front of the biodiesel plant less than two miles from our door. Usually I pump from the 500 gallon tank of B100 in our carriage house. With a car that gets 1000 miles to the tank I can usually go on a round trip without refueling too.

Sulfur is a terrible pollutant. It combines readily with moisture in the atmosphere to make sulfurous or sulfuric acid--both highly corrosive. They are one of the principle causes of decomposition of limestone and marble edifices. I recall a study of Greek ruins some years ago in which the scientists could actually measure the degradation of the pillars and statues that had occurred since Athenian smog reached some critical frequency. Also, sulfur changes the pH (acidity/alkalinity) of formerly pristine mountain lakes and stream, which affects the algae community shifting to dominant species that can withstand lower pH. These organisms are often not the preferred species of the organisms that feed on algae, lowering the rate of weight gain of each dependent species. This ultimately depresses the weigh gain of fish. Also, changes in pH affect fish fertility and reproductive success. Sometimes the changes are quite unexpected as when sulfur enters water that is deficient in sulfur, a required micronutrient of plants and animals. It can result in huge population bursts in formerly sulfur-deficient species. In very small amounts sulfur usually acts as a fertilizer. In larger amounts it is a definite polluter.
