OK, here's the info I have on my RAM, this is from the PC Pitstop website. I had the tests run on the computer agin. There suggestions again were to install more memory, and to defrag the hard drive, which I've done already 2 days ago. Do these reading on the RAM really look bad?
RAM installed 192 MB Windows RAM 191 MB Total RAM slots 2 Available RAM slots 0 Max RAM module size 0 MB Memory Type 64+128;DIMM,DRAM,|Synchronous;T16 Level 1 Cache 32 KB Level 2 Cache 128 KB Speed Rating 955 MB/s (88% of 10098 similar) I think what I installed a couple years ago was the 128 mb. Should I consider replacing the 64mb with another 128 (looks like I have no place left to install a third one) or do they come even larger than 128 now? Thanks Gilly |

Gilly,
Sounds like the system has slowed down recently and that before it was running ok. I don't think RAM will help very much at this point, although it won't hurt. Windows 9x/ME tends to get corrupted over time and the best thing to do is reinstall the OS. Try an overlay install first, that is, install over the existing system, all your settings and installed apps will remain intact. If that doesn't work, then it's time to wipe the disk and install fresh. Backup all your data first! If it were me and I had to wipe the disk anyway, I'd think real hard about upgrading to Windows 2000 or Windows XP at this time. (upping the RAM to 256 MB would be beneficial) Good luck!

I don't consider myself any great IT guru, but I have had some experience with some of the problems that you are talking about. First I want to say that I have a 133 mhz Compaq laptop that won't die. It is so old it doesn't have a usb hub. I keep it around the house on a wireless network and just beat the hell out of it. I think it is great. I understand the problem of propriatory hardware though and have had to deal with that. It is a pain but isn't any different than having to buy a Mercedes tail light lens from the dealer.
As far as the key strokes falling behind. The spyware thing is scarry. If someone has installed spyware on your system, you need to get it off of there. I think that those kinds of programs are really hard to get rid of, rather like a virus. How to tell how much ram with windows ME. Go to start, click on settings, click on system, click on the performance tab. You will be able to read how much ram you have installed but more importantly find out how much is being used at that exact moment. So when your puter(I like that) starts to act up go to this and find out how much ram is being used. If you are only using 50%, then you know that something else( maybe the spyware) is the problem. I guess you know this but that spyware is copying each of your keystrokes and saving it for someone else to read later. A bad thing. Next, please tell me you have a good virus scan software that updates daily. ME is a bad operating system. It was released too soon with many problems. But there are fixes. You need to get windows update regularily and keep the system updated. I am using ME on this( my company laptop) and it works pretty well after all the updates but it used to have some real problems. Sorry, so long, hope it helps. |

Hi Glen and Gilly, We are all writing at the same time.
Glen,I suspect that Gilly has a slow (clock speed) processor that would make his an unlikely candidate for a new opperating system because of the cost. |

Thanks for the replies (it's doing it right now BTW).
I have work to do around the house today, so i can only check for messages every so often. I'd like to check what bmunse mentioned about seeing how much RAM is being used. BUT if I click on "settings", my only options are "control panel" "dial up networking", printers" and "task bar and start menu". I have already tried the recovery CD. I'm hoping the spyware thing is gone. I don't really get too freaked about others knowing what I'm doing on here. I buy a few things on the net, but hope that using secure websites only will protect things like CC#s and the like. The PC Pitstop originally found it, and they're not seeing it now, so hope that's not an issue anymore. (I got rid of it as soon as I knew it was there). Yes, Glen is correct, it's mainly been the last month or so that this has been an issue. I may try calling my ISP, they have helped me alot in the past getting things optimized, but that was back when my dial up speed was really lousy due to some phone company problems in my area (old equipment). Thanks much!!! Gilly |

Sorry gilly, Start first then go to control panel and then settings then system. There is another thread that suggests a MS fix. Check it out as it looks appropriate. Do you know what processor you have? (clock speed)

Gilly,
What's the clock speed of your processor? MS recommends at least 300 MHz but is 'real life' I've found that 600 MHz is practical for WinXP. |

Still the answer avoids me on the clock speed:
If I use this path: Start/settings/control panel/system, on the general tab, no mh listed, just 191.0MB RAM on the performance tab, no clock spped either, it does say memory 191.0MB RAM, system resources 60% free, file system 32bit, virtual memory 32bit, disc compression not installed, no pc card sockets are installed. Three icons on the bottom of this tab screen, File settings, Graphics, and Virtual Memory. On that virtual memory screen, the circle is clicked that says ""Let Windows manage my virtual memory setting (recommended)". i did a little searching, just can't find the speed of the processor. I can't believe it would be a problem now, I've had connection problems before, but nothing like this. Thanks Gilly |

Your CPU speed is 633 MHz. It's getting confusing with two threads going so I'll post on the other one...
