Interesting comments on Rush's ESPN adventures...

Made even more interesting by the source, and the WRITER!--remember Jimmie "Dyno-mite" Walker from good times? Probably one of the last folks you'd expect to be defending Limbaugh from charges of racism, eh?

I find the main theme of this article hard to accept. If you believe that black quarterbacks earned their positions in large part because they are black then you have to believe that coaches and owners would rather have a losing season and empty stadiums instead of a winning season. Does that sound like a good, money making, capitalist business plan?

Quarterbacks are all quatatively rated. It's easy to tell who is better than who.

I also don't understand the free speech argument. Rush is free to say what he wants. If his employer thinks Rush has become more of a liability than they like, they have the right to fire him.

They didn't fire him, he resigned.

He didn't dispute a black quarterback's record...He accused the sports media of "going easy" on them, as compared to white quarterbacks who are at similar performance levels, just because of race issues.

Please check your facts.

Mike - I just gave the article a quick read and jotted down what I thought.

If he resigned then I still don't understand the freedom of speech argument. He spoke his mind then resigned, what's the problem?

I pointed out the quarterback ratings with the idea that people can look up the stats and make up their own mind rather than rely on the medias analysis if their analysis is viewed as biased.

If the media is being softer on black quarterbacks then I would ask why? My cynical answer is that it must sell more papers or get better ratings.

There was a huge outcry from other media, viewers, etc...why should everyone lambast him for speaking what he perceived to be truth? Political correctness has permeated every other aspect of society, why do folks think it hasn't made it into sportscasting as well?

It most certainly has, and he just pointed it out..

True. So what is wrong with him saying that he thinks the sports media HAS been reporting such things with a bias? Why all the indignation from so many?

ALL of the media--sports media included--have been forced by the likes of Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and other "champions of civil rights", into having to be hyper-sensitive to racial issues, even at the expense of true and accurate reporting.

I guess because of freedom of speech.

I don't see anything wrong with it. He just has to deal with the consequences of what he said regardless of whether he was right or wrong.

Again, my view is that the media does whatever will sell the most. If being un-PC will hurt sales then they will be PC. They are producing a product that the market wants.

Well, I can't disagree with any of that.

I'm not so much angry at the media as I am at the hypocrites and crybabies that are forcing them into a position where they HAVE to be so PC-sensitive to stay in business.

Great article! Thanks for posting it.

Does anyone remember Jimmie the Greek? A well known sportscaster whos career ended when he also made comments about black football players that weren't really racial. He was fired/retired. Bill Cosby soon came to his defence, but to no avail.
