Ham antenna on the Benz?
Somehow it just doesn't look....right. I've been thinking about going the Larsen on-glass dual-band route or the Sti-Co OEM antenna. Back a few years ago I wouldn't go on-glass but I've been hearing some good about today's glass mounts. There's gotta be a Ham or two on here. Whatcha got on your Benz?

On-the-glass off-brand found on EBay. It looks like a large cellular antenna and covers 2-mtrs and 440. A workable compromise to drilling a hole in the roof.
If you clean the glass carefully and let the adhesive cure properly, it has no problem holding at 300D speeds. It will not adhere if applied during cold weather. Ken300D

How do you think a center-trunk-mounted antenna would look?
I'm not a ham operator, but I'm thinking on the lines of putting a CB in my car... |

No antenna yet but I might go with a stealth version of the car radio antenna.
I have a scanner antenna that looks like a long cell phone antenna. I might use that one. Most people can't tell the difference.

This car had so many antennae, insects were dropping dead out of the sky of envy. Had a huge whip, three or four 80's era cell phone stems, a CB antenna, and some other thing that could only have been used to re-route sattelites. Shame, the rear was sitting very low- leveling was not up to par- or mega tornado hunting computers were in there or something.
It looked like a sea urchin. horrible! Thanks for considering taste with your antenna application! k

My old truck had 3 antennas on it. 2 for UHF and 1 for VHF. Those were the days I didn't care about aesthetics, but with this new(to me) car I'm not going that route.
For those who are interested, I contacted Sti-Co and US Communications in Anahiem, Ca, for Am/Fm disguised stock dual-band antennas. You tell them what kinda car and what freq bands and they tell you if they can do it. Well, they are NOT cheap. Around $300-$400, depending if you provide your own antenna, etc. So, now I'm trying to figure how they do it so I can make it myself. I know a dual-band coupler and Am/Fm broadcast coupler are needed, but I don't know enough about antennas to know how to get the stock one to a happy medium for 2m/70cm use. |
