We've got a very strict firewall system on our PC's (XP) at work and so I rarely get spammed and get frequent checks for spyware.

But I'm curious about my home computer.

Do these things affect Macs? I have a password-protected router and computers are separatly password protected.

Need I mention that I'm a clueless user?

I don't know if Macs are affected or not.

I can tell you that it is really frustrating. MY machine is about 3 years old, but I purchased it with an 80g hard drive and 512mb of ram, thinking I wouldn'y have to upgrade for awhile and I'm pretty ticked.

The funny thing is everytime I've had problems with Bellosuth and called tech support, they always tell me to turn off the firewall.

The pc porums tell you that that's the last ting you should do.

I too am a clueless user. Add frustrated and impatience, and you make one slightly upset individual.

I was thinking about purchasing some software to check deep into the bowels of my machine to see if anything needs to be repaired, so I checked online and found pcbug docto. It tells me I have 88 problems with my cpu. Thye'll "fix" them for $39.95.

I don't mind spending the money, but I was uncomfortable. We all know about some of these shady web scam artists.

Any suggestions?

Ted, I used the link you provided to discover the following info for Mac users: "As the Macintosh isn't as far spread as the Windows PC platform, it is also not a target that spyware makers have found yet. Therefore, the only targets that could be called spyware would be keyloggers and the like; for finding those I recommend using a regularly updated anti-virus program for Macintosh. "

OK...I gave up and took my cpu to gateway for them to restore the original factory settings.

All the stuff I downloaded to clean up the machine did remove a bunch of stuff, but the damn thing was slower than and automatic 240D going uphill.

Additionally, it went ti searchcentrix.com everytime I tried to go anywhere on the web, which led to my final decision.

Question:

Which antivirus program do you guys think willl keep that crap out?
I purchased Spysweeperfor this cpu and it seems to let me know when certain Adware/spyware attempt o hijack my home page, I also have adblocker? Do I need more?

Do I need somethingelse in addition to Nortons or Symantec?

I notice that Norton's antivirus has compatability problems with windows xp, which was verified by my ISP(bellsouth)?
