We wouldn't be talking about any of this without the "civil disobedience" by Greenpeace, now would we? Sometimes that's the whole point. That's what gets the wheels in motion.

Nope. It doesn't encourage me to consider thier cause at ALL. It only makes them look like criminals, and actually undermines thier credibility, and makes me LESS likely to listen to what they have to say about anything. I have no more or less interest in thier issue now than I did before I heard about this latest escapade. I'm impressed with discussion and possible solutions, not publicity stunts.

They are free to protest if they want. I'm 110% behind that right.

I am also free to say that they look like dumba$$es.

If they break the law while they are protesting, then the police are also free to arrest them for it.

Dissent is not a virtue, its a tool. Sometimes the tool is appropriately used, sometimes not. How does one tell when its appropriate? I guess when it agrees with what one believes.

If I lived in a self-described communist paradise and I preferred to live free, I'd probably be considered a dissenter. Like Solzhenitsyn. IF I preferred open markets and I lived in a capitalist society with a out-of-control government addicted to taxes, I'd be a dissenter like Milton Friedman. Dissent need not be attached to illegal acts. Its just sexier.

Mikeover, others,

Ok, so you may not be on Greenpaeces side ever but over all this starts the dialogue. It brings this issue to the top and may involve other people thus possibly garnering support. Maybe their actions were because of lack of "good" discussion. I sure have never heard of illegal mohogany etc... Have you?
If you bash Greenpeace I'd love to hear what you think of EF-morph-ELF? or WWF, Sierra etc...?

good 1 w/ MLK Jr.!

Mahogany plantations were started in the 1930s and 1950s in much of Central America after the virgin forests were completely logged out (Britain used an awfully lot of it to build warships....). Harvest of non-plantation mahogany is, I believe, illegal in most countries, as is the import.

Those planations from the 1950s are coming up on their second thinning, I believe, so there is a decent amout of fair quality mahogany available on the legal market, but it's not anywhere near as nice to look at as the old stuff. Guess what gets smuggled?

John Ashcroft lost his Senate bid to a dead man in 2000 -- tells you all you need to know. As far as I'm concerned, he's a National Socialist dyed through and through. His contempt for the law is astounding, but then again, he's another one of those "born again Christians" God talks to all the time...... appears to believe that dissent is criminal, whatever it may be. I expect him to start accussing any Democrat who criticizes Bush of being a terrorist any day now -- got any realestate that would make a nice death camp? After all, any "enemy combatant" can be tried in secret and excuted post-haste, right?

Worst thing that's happened to the Justice Department since J. Edgar Hoover.

Peter

Aside from those little things--being a Christian and being defeated by a dead guy, what has he actually done.

Joined the Nazis?
Accused Democrats of being unpatriotic?
Started death camps?

Maybe, but he shure is stepping all over our rights under the premise of security. Have you guys seen Bowling for Columbine? You may not agree with M. Moore but the truth is that all this stuff smells of good ol' communism. Scare 'em into submition! For your country....

Members of the NRA, responsible hunters and fisherman, have done so much more for conservation than those clubs you have listed above.

I don't know about the NRA but agree about the others. There are many responsible citizens and companies that do their part. same for some farmers, ranchers and responsible builders/developers.
