Germany's Autobahn on History Channel

Do see the show if you have a chance. It came on tonight at 9:00 p.m. EST. It was truely facinating to see a Ruf going 212 mph on the Autobahn, at night to make it that much more challenging. The show was filmed mostly from the inside of a Three Pointed Star, but did not show how fast the car was going.

It also showed the segment of a SL high speed crash into a guard rail, roll over a few times. Then the driver walked away from the crash. The commentator then said how well constructed the German automobiles really are.

They do not have cruise control either. At least on the mercedes that I rode in.

I am watching it right now, I am in MST. I am recording it as well for my future reference.

Just after the Autobahn program, they did a show on the Pacific Coast Highway.

Geez, what a let down after seeing the Autobahn. I mean the scenery is nice, but 120mph!?! Legally!!

I had seen it before

Quite a show.

How about the two racers that did the 270 mph speed trials, one of them passing away in a major wreck.

I think that I was passed by a contractor's panel truck on Route 80 in NJ that was trying to break their record last week.

Can you imagine if there was a "nice" law, that was enforced, that kept folks from flipping the bird, and a law that kept dopes out of the left hand lane. My view of heaven.

We need a German autobahn type road here. Good lane discipline, no talegateing, good driver training. Sounds like driveing paridise to me. Did you see the part where the Merc was passed by the blue wagon? That was sad. One of the things I must do before I die is peg the tach of an S600 on the autobahn, how far will that speedo go?

An autobahn isn't feasible in the US because the domestics would actually have to man-up and build decent cars! Not to mention, all American drivers would have to go through drivers ed again, or the fact that we don't have the money for such an infrastructure expense. "Don't you know there is a war going on?"

American cities are not in close proximity to one another, like in Europe, so motorists would be driving at 100mph+ for hours on end. This sounds good, but I suspect that many cars are not 100% perfect mechanically, compliance would be expensive and difficult to enforce. Environmentalists would carp that it is a waste of fossil fuels, etc..

I've seen the HC show twice; I like Germany's method of enforcement.

el presidente That pesky speed limiter would have to be removed. I was watching some show on speedvision and they ran a CL55 on an oval with no speed limiter I think it made it to 187mph. So an S600 should be good for mid to high 170s, or maybe a CL63 would be better.

Agreed.

You want flat out? Take a CL65 de-limited and it's reported to be good for a tick over 200mph

Thats the car! I'lll post pics if I ever do it. Also I'll do it in true American fashion, one hand on the wheel one on a camra, with a phone straped to me head calling the states. "Mom you'd never guess what I'm doing now"

Isn't that the punchline to the joke "What are a redneck's last words?"

Did anybody understand the bit about ghost drivers. I was fetching some food so I missed it.

Anyway great show. That guy that was caught tailgating would be actually keeping a reasonable distance here in NY LOL
