Friends,
I'm an Augusta native, and until moving out of the state, went to every tournament from age 6 to age 22. In Augusta, we dont have Spring Break, kids get off for Masters Week. I remember in 5th or 6th grade learning that kids in other parts of the country took off different times for Spring Break. It was a shock. Re: Seve in Augusta - I have a friend over on Pine Needle Road with a guest bathtub still permanently stained from whatever Seve's housecrew put in there back in the early 90s. I dont have any friends who rent to the golfers anymore. Generally, some golfers are decent folk, whom you'd like to have in your home, and the rest are just cocky and obnoxious. Badges used to be a dime a dozen (in the 60s, you could pick em up free for the asking from your local bank)...but too much marketing money has driven their re-sale value through the roof. The tournament is over-commercialized and too un-Southern, now. Oh, and narwhal, the caterers for the Masters aren't closed the rest of the year. They only work from March - October. I've had their delight to the palate pimento cheese sandwiches and egg-salad sandwiches at a June wedding before, wrapped in the same wax paper that they use for the tournament. Y'all be careful out there! - John John Meadows, Esq. Charleston, WV '87 420SEL '85 190E 2.3 '83 300D |

At lot of the mystic surrounding The Masters is folklore. I heard lots of stories about Azelas not blooming on time and every potted plant in the south would be emptied for the show. Or if they tried to bloom too soon the entire course would be packed in ice. I know that's false because in 97 there wasn't a flower to be seen there. That was the first year Tiger played there so it was probably an omen! I've heard that there is never a full membership, one slot is always empty for the ghost of Bobby Jones. I've heard that talking business on the course is strictly forbidden and will get you kicked out. Hundreds of other stories. That for me is part of the magic and fun of the Masters and Augusta National. There is no line between fantasy and reality.
I do know that they can pull off some petty amazing landscape feats. Like transplanting 36 full grown pine trees in a fairway and they look like they've been there 50 years!

Cap'n...
Being a local and getting stuck in visitor traffic on Berckmans Road because you FORGOT that the tournament was in town can be a 3 hour lesson in how different fantasy and reality can be. *grin* In case anyone wants to know: The Masters is ALWAYS held the weekend terminating the first full week in April. Some people invariably will ask. I've been shot at by an M-1 or M-14 (I didn't ask) sneaking onto the course at night through the A.C.C.. The beer tent at 16 has the greatest tap to lines-being-served ratio on the whole course. (We learned that one in high school.) Sigh....y'all are making me feel homesick. ![]() - John |
