Good job William. Hopefully I was of some assistance. These beasties really aren't all that complicated on the inside, once you get used to them that is .

BTW how did the bottom rails look? Plus, how did you prime the oil pump?

Yes Mike you certainly did help!If I had taken car to shop and had chain rolled in the engine would not have lasted long as right side lower rail was very ragged as the bolts holding it had backed out to the point of touching the back side of front cover and rail was very worn.

By taking front cover off I was able to change, tensioner, all rails,T chain, oil pump chain and it's rail front seal and all gaskets.

To prime pump I had to take lower pan back off remove oil pump from chain sprocket then fill top of pump with oil and carefully replace, instant oil pressure.I also replaced the bottom rubber piece and screen of oil pump with the newer style 48 mm as I had the old style 34mm and now have double the oil pressure at idle that I had before.......
Thanks...... William Rogers.....

Good shot William.
I've noticed, especially on the four/five and six cylinders, that with the head off they all look alike .

Oil pump chain

My 85 380SE looks like yours. When you replaced the oil pump chain did the chain have a master link or was it continuous?

I can't figure out how to get my timing cover back on. The oil pump chain gets in the way.

The oil pump chain that I got was one piece I also replaced it's small rail ,its done with the bottom oil pan off and you do most of the work underneath the car I don't remember the exact sequence but I remember that it was not too hard to figure out.

I did the whole job with out a manual which is a fools trick. As far as the front cover not going on I remember that putting the cover back on was very straight foward it should just snap roght on the dowel pins .I assume you dropped the upper oil pan a touch when you took the cover off if not that could be your hang up.how were your bopttom rails? mine were trash.....

Is the oil pump gear on the crank lined up straight up and down with the oil pumps gear?

One bottom rail was broken off. It was the one that just slips over two pins.

I had the heads off so I didn't need to loosen the oil pan. I had the oil sump cover off.

I found the answer to my oil pump chain question on another forum. Seems you can't get the timing cover back on with the chain on the crankshaft sprocket (or even on the crankshaft).

So what you do is leave the crank seal out, replace the cover, put the pump chain in through the crank hole in the cover, then on the sprocket, then put in the crank seal.

I would never have thought of this. Thank heaven for the internet!

Regards,
Richard

Great it's been nearly two years since I did mine
so lots of details have sliped my high mileage mind. before I started the engine I turned it over by hand many times checking cam marks and distributer at TDC. Also oil pump must be full as it won't self prime don't ask me how I know........
