Good. I showed her this thread and she nodded her head in approval, saying "...mmmmhhhhm, that's right. Alright then...."

We keep our GSP in the house with us until it is time to hunt. These guys get absolutely morose without the companionship of their masters. He still is one of the best bird finders out our way: living the good life doesnt seem to hurt him one bit. We never crated him though, when we got him as a pup from the kennel where he was born, it was winter in Minnesota and we just let him crawl into bed with us. He became a great foot warmer, and we never had chewing problems with him. Now that he is older, he sleeps in the laundry room (on his own accord), with his buddy, a big black and white cat.

GSP's are the sweetest dogs on earth. I had one when I was a kid, have always thought of getting another. It bred accidently with one of our labs, and the pups were truly great dogs too - always wondered why they didn't try to breed that mix.

A lonesome dog will bark. Unfortunately, the kind of attention a barking dog gets at 4 a.m. is not usually positive. To echo the crate advise, please try it. It works for me. Please don't hurt any animal. Their only defense is to fight back or cower. Neither of those options makes a good pet.

go the crate way

it will give the dog a sense of security. When you move the crate out to the garage after a week or so spend a lot of time out there with her. Excessive barking often is the sign of boredom or not getting enough interaction, execise with you or other animals. To help break a dog of excessive barking, put about 5 pennies in a soda can and shake it when the dog barks. The noise will distract the dog and after repeated efforts the dog (at least mine did) will only bark when its warrented.
