If the setup on the 300D is the same as my 80 300SD then I would first check the bowden cable (actually it is a rod on my car not a cable) and see if the rod is missing the bushing where it attaches...

Make sure you filter your oil to 5 microns since Frybrid (VW) filters are rated at 5 micons. I made the initial mistake of only filtering to 10 microns and would run through filters every 300 miles....

Sold my 82 300SD a couple of weeks ago and here is the link to the ebay auction. Subtract the cost of the Frybrid kit and you have a sale price of $6450. Hope it helps....
