I serviced the transmission in my '87 300SDL using Valvoline Dexron VI Synthetic and it shifts a bit cleaner and fuel mileage has improved too.

Symptoms:

When cycling glow plugs, the glow plug relay makes a whining/singing noise for maybe 5-10 seconds and then stops.

Car will not crank or turn over at all.

Looks as if it may be made in ...C-H-I-N-A...? (which may or may not be a bad thing). Always could swap gages for a liquid filled PSI or metric BAR gage...
