4 speed swap, simplified wiring?

i was mounting the four speed shifter and I noticed the plug on the switch on the shifter is identical to the plug that the auto trans wires from the neutral safetfy/reverse switch on the trans. this is where the auto trans plugs into the main harness on the upper drivers side of the hump inside the car. so I plugged the manual switch in there and it starts right up and the reverse light works. is there something I am missing here? I noticed most of the swaps had DYI harnesses but this seems like the factory intent.

I used all factory stuff when I did the swap on my '83. Nothing was ghetto fabbed.

does this also incorporate a clutch saftey or do you just have to be careful? can a clutch safety be made to work? seems like you could wire in to the neutral saftey portion. is there a place for a switch on the clutch pedal?

There wasn't one. The clutch switch is used for the cruise control.

Oh OK, so now the question is, should I hook it to the cruise circuit or use it as a safety to the nuetral safety circuit. if I dont hook it to the cruise and I push in the clutch with the cruise engaged, will it over rev the engine?

It won't over rev it but it will revv it up to redline.

I would compare the wiring diagrams for an 82-83 240D with the auto and manual to see what MB did between the two. You may be able to get a cruise module and harness from a 240D and swap yours out.

Unless you're the type of driver that parks in gear I'd leave it for the cruise control. I always use the parking brake and leave the tranny in neutral unless I have to park on a steep incline (Rev or 1st depending on if I park up or down hill).

How would I know? Mine barely worked for a few minutes at 75mph two years ago before I stripped out everything CC related.

As a temporary fix, I used a push button switch under the dash to complete the starting circuit. I may leave it that way, as it serves two functions: theft deterent and it reminds my wife (and me) to push the clutch in before starting. I always park in gear as our driveway is on an incline. I thought about trying to get the CC figured out, but it only works marginally anyway.

Its surprising that the manual 240D does not have a clutch interlock. Maybe I will wire a relay to a magnet switch and get some theft prevention at the same time as a clutch safety

Most vehicles in Europe at the time were manual so MB probably figured everybody should know to push in the clutch before you start. Even today, many vehicles don't use a clutch switch.
