ABS-light stayes on

Hi all , ,

Trying to work out the problem of the ABS-light that stays on. I've cleaned the front wheel sensors and checked the fuse on the OVP-relay.

This is how I'm thinking. The ABS-light never goes off. Therefor my guess is that someting failes in the self test that the ABS-system performs at startup. Can anyone explain exactly what the ABS-system tests during startup??

The car is a 300E -92

Thanks, ,

even though the fuse on the ov relay is good, the relay may still be at fault/ can you substitute it with a good one? what part number is on the relay?

carson356> Thanks for your reply!

You're right about that the relay can be faulty. I don't really know why I checked the relay at all. When searching the forum I learnt that when the relay was bad the RPM-gauge wasn't functioning. However - when reading about the OVP-relay it sounds like a strange "gadget" that can cause several things to behave wierd.

I don't have a "known" good relay to perform a test with but I can get the partnumber and post it tomorrow (It's my fathers car so I don't have access to it right now)

Any other thoughts about the startup self test?? Am I on the right track?? By the way -according to my father the battery is replaced recently so I don't think it's a low-voltage-problem.

Just about everything turns the light on. Actually after the alternator is working, the light is turned OFF by the satisfied control unit. Common problems are the OVP, the ECU, any open circuited sensor, powers, grounds, pump relay function. Even the brake lights are monitored.

Big thanks to you all!

It sounds like it's time to grap the multimeter and go and get dirty

By the way. When I resistance tested the front wheel sensors they measured 1020ohm and 970ohm. I read that they should be 1k so I guess that they are within the tolerance?!

They are fine. The only thing that triggers the sensors is when the brake pads get low enough to expose the sensor contacts to the rotors...the metal rotors complete the circuit to the sensor wiring and cause the brake pad indicator on the dash to light up...that's it.

Different sensor, different light. ABS vs. pad wear.

Is there a reasonably priced commercially available code reader/reset tool for cars that are pre OBDII?
