I have a 84 300D turbo
Does this car have a Kick down switch? If so where is it? Thanks John |

Are you referring to the one under the accelerator or under the hood?

I am not sure. The wireing diagram shows a Kick down switch and a kickdown solenoid. I cannot find either.

Admittedly, my car ('92 201) is completely different from yours...
But my kickdown switch is located under the accelerator pedal. It will take you about 10 seconds to check if yours is the same. Just lift the pedal, and you'll see it there, or you won't. It's easily operated with your finger once the pedal is out of the way. Jeff Pierce

Thanks Thanks
I found the switch under the gas pedal. The carpet was over it and I could not see it. Now where is the kick down solenoid? John |

Solenoid is on the back of the transmission, to the right of the output shaft. It is kinda a two piece job. It has a coil that is black plastic with a single connector and thru the center is what looks like a bolt. This is actually the valve that the coil operates. They do go bad even when they check good electrically. The wire feeding the coil can also go bad. It tends to either get cut/pinched and thus open, or it will short out to the bracket it is tied to. If you sort out the wire, you will blow a fuse when you floor it. If you suddenly have full defrost heat, you have blown the fuse. Either #8 or #14, I can't remember. Not real cheap parts. Fastlane does have them I believe. And yeah, these cars can be real "exciting" to drive without a kickdown.

Thanks BobK
You decribed my problem to the tee. It was blowing fuse #14 every time I floored the car. Found the wire pinched into. Fixed that and everything is alright. Thanks J0hn 84 300d |

Bad thing was how long it took me to find the problem. Just hate to put the car up high enough to crawl under the transmission and work on it. Even worse was fixing wife's SL. That car really sits low and I had to replace the solenoid coil and valve on it. Still, it was a cheap fix and it's nice to get one from time to time.
