Hello Everyone...
Let's see what yall may know:
I have a 92 400E, Excellent car that I just did a KILLER monotone paintjob on. Anyway, it seems when the car is cold, especially in the winter, it takes the car about a mile to switch out of first gear. If i warm the car up for a few minutes before driving I dont have this problem. Does this sound familiar to ANYONE??? ANY advice??? Thanx in advance!!!

If you look in the owner's manual, it says that this is the case when cold and is normal

The transmission computer keeps the car in gear longer when cold to help the cats and the engine warm up faster. My 93 400e does the same thing.

Emission control holds 1st to increase RPMs to heat Cat Conv.
I have a '92 400e that does exactly the same thing. In fact, when it is extremely cold, the car has a totally different shifting behavior than under normal conditions. The shift from 3rd to 4th is very soft and slow when the car is still cold. As operating temp increases, the shift behavior normalizes. I am not far from my 90K service so I may be a tad low on tranny fluid plus it has some age on it...Should be improvement with service...good luck and don't worry about the 1st gear hold.
