Untechnical! - Scratchy Noise when I accelerate
I am driving a 1980 450sl. Recently, when I accelerate, I am hearing a scratching noise that sounds like it's coming from under the hood. I know this is very undetailed, and I don't expect anyone to be able to answer this for me, but is there anything I should look for that may be causing this, or has the potential to?
Thanks! |

Maybe your car needs a throat lozenge?
Seriously, I'm taking a stab at this one, but perhaps you need new motor mounts. When you accelerate, the motor twists to one side due to torque...if your motor mounts are really shot, it may be causing a pulley to come into contact with a fixed object in the engine compartment? Again, I am REALLY stretching with this one, but I would looks for clues by checking exterior engine pulleys for marring and areas surrounding them for any signs of contact...

scratching noise
I had same problem on my 77 450sl. Thought it was the catalytic converter breaking up. Checked under car found broken screw holdon on heat shield, causing vibration when running car. Seldom heard in nuetral. Good luck, Abe G
