190e 2.3 pinging and timing .....
Here's an odd one:
The old 190e is pinging under load from standing starts. Some brands of fuel (all 91 octane) seem to help but ..... I decided to check the timing. I found the timing is between the TDC mark and the 10 degree before mark. When I tried twisting the distributor to retard the timing it didn't make any difference. It continued to read at the same spot. Am I missing something here? Thanks, Haasman

On 1987 & later 2.3's the timing is crankshaft(flywheel) controlled & non-adjustable! The distributor only allows the spark thru to the correct plug!
BY moving the distributor from its base setting you can cause cross-fire. AT TDC there is a punch mark on the distriburor housing that MUST align with the center line of the rotor. TRY different fuel stations & a different brand of fuel. IF that doesn't help you might have excessive carbon build-up.

Not sure if your vehicle is equipped with an R-16 resistor, but that resistor is in place to retard the timing when needed. Not sure if that would cause the problem you are experiencing. But either way, if you use premium fuel, that shouldnt matter.. just an idea.

Maybe check the EGR path. This is designed to cool down a lean-burn combustion.

Thanks for the input. I did return the R-16 resistor this past summer when the pinging began but it didn't help. I have found that only Shell and Chevron premium fuel work well.
This weekend I adjusted the disributor back to its original spot (marks on the adjusting area) and for some reason now no pinging at all?!? Ambient temperature does play into this .... temps greater than 70 degrees have made it ping. This makes me thing that possibly it could be an EGR issue. Thanks again for the suggestions, Haasman

ONLY 1991 & later 2.3's in the USA have EGR systems! IN fact the 1991 & later engine(2.3) has different pistons, cylinder head, & intake system!

Is there a temperature input into the timing adjustment?
If it is carbon build up (which considering the miles is very likely) what is the best way to remove it? I saw where some suggested spraying carb cleaner in the intake (with air cleaner removed) . Haasman
