Angry Instrument Cluster Gauges Died

I have a 1985 300SD Turbo. Recently the instrument cluster gauges went dead while I was driving. The only thing that works on the dash pod is the clock. No ammeter, no tach, no temp, oil pressure, nothing. The turn signals also stopped working, not just in the instrument cluster, but on the outside of the vehicle. Emergency flashers work. I checked the fuses and the connections to the instrument cluster but still nothing. Can anybody clue me in as to what's going on? Thanks.

Instrument Gauges

I had a similar problem on a 1986 420 SEL -- looked at the fuses - all looked ok....but after a closer look the cluster panel fuse was actually fatigued (looked like corrosion) in the middle of the open link...

Not sure this is same but worth a double take!!

Also try relays

S_Class

I had a wierd interaction of guages going dead when I pushed on the brakes. I reseated all the relays in the fuse box area and that cleared it up. Hope you find a solution.

Exclamation Fuses

I just solved this problem in my 1982 300TD by replacing all of the fuses. I was completely mystefied, and someone on another forum mentioned that as the fuses age (approx 10 yrs old) the conductor crystalizes and causes problems. In my case, pushing the brake pedal caused all the gauges to die. One interesting thing was my Tachometer, horn and backup lights are on the same circuit, and those continued to work. I also had no turn signals or brake lights.

Happy Motoring

Talking Bingo!

That was it! The fuses! The one for the instrument cluster was apparently a bit corroded, not enough that you would notice it, but just enough that it built up enough resistance so that the aforementioned items wouldn't work. Cleaning it solved the problem, and now I'm off to buy some new fuses. I'm going to replace them all. Thanks gang!

The same thing happened to me yesterday. Today I pulled the fuse out to check it and one of the end caps stayed behind. That's my one beef with the German cars, those fuses can look OK on cursory inspection, but be blown when one looks closer.

Now if I can figure out my tempermental A/C blower...
