88 190E 2.3 Vacuum Line Woes

Hi All,

I am having serious trouble trying to figure out where all my vacuum lines go now that i have reassembled my engine. I have a picture of where two of them come from. I am trying to located where the two that come from under the throttle body go. I am also trying to figure out what vacuum lines hook up to the thermo vacuum sensor on the block. I have had some people tell me that one of them hooks up to the distributor, but i dont have any valves on the distributor. Despite my lack of hooking these wires up, the car starts ok when its cold and runs ok once its found its idle. However, when the car has already been heated up it has a hard time finding idle unless you hold the accelerator down for a bit.

Thanks for the help,
-- Steven

The smaller one goes to the thermo vacuum valve, then to the distributor if you have a line on there. Not sure if the 1988 had the vacuum advance or not. Then on the other side of the thermo valve it goes to the drivers side fender well to a connector there for the fuel vapor return. The large one goes to the other side of the fuel vapor canister return as well.

You got it. What the vacuum valve does is open at 50 degrees or 60 depending on what one it is. This supplies vacuum to the fender well check valve. Then that opens and allows the gas fumes to pass back into the intake to be burnt.

You have restored my faith in Mercedes Forums. It took me 2 months and finally getting pissed off and venting my anger on my fav BMW forum before I found out about this one. Many Thanks !!

I luckily work at an auction so when I was confused I would wait til another 1986 vintage 190 would go through and pop the hood and have a look see. But alas the best thing I have found is the MB Maint CD. That baby has helped me do more things with my 190 when fixing it than anything else and of course I try to bring that knowledge back to the forums.
