How to replace door lock knob on '86 300E?

Thanks to the help of forum contributors, I've been able to replace all but one dog chewed items on the interior of my car. The one remaining part is the passenger side door lock knob. The tip of the knob is chewed up and looks bad. You can still grap the stalk enough to lock or unlock the door, but I'd like to replace knob so it looks nicer.
It appears that replacement knobs are available for a very modest price... about $6. What is required to replace the knob? Do I have to remove the inner door panel? How is the knob attached to the lock mechanism?
Any tips / pointers on how to accomplish this task would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Mika

Mika,

If you are talking about the black plastic knob with the silver-looking insert in the top, it just screws on and off.

Sweet...
Do you have to remove the door panel to make sure the threaded shaft doesn't fall down, or can it be done easily without removing the door panel?
Thanks,
mika

When you unscrew it, there will be enough of the threaded rod still sticking up inside the ferrule to just screw the new one on....

There should be enough, just unscrew it when it's in the unlocked position

LOL...what kills me are the folks with lots of kids and dogs!! I guess all the vets and pet superstores are happy, but maybe not the horses!! LOL

Ah well... it's impossible to convince non-dog people why dogs are so wonderful. I never had dogs growing up, and shared your views exactly... stinky, noisy, destructive animals.. Why bother?
About 2 months ago, my wife convinced me to adopt a pair of dogs from the pound. Now I understand why dogs are known as man's best friends... they truly can be the most loving, adorable creatures imaginable. Of course, they can also be terribly furstrating... but that's true of anything you care deeply about, living or inanimate.

Well, it was the least offensive of the damaged parts. The lock still worked, and since it was the passenger side, I hardly ever touched it. The shift knob, on the other hand, was something I had to touch every time I drove the car, and the lack of a functional combination switch made the car impossible to drive in the rain...

I would like to suggest that instead of going to a dealer and spending $6, that you go to a junkyard and unscrew one from there. Usually the ones from the back doors are in the best shape. I have also found that a knob from a '71 250S looks the same as the knob on my '94 E420.
The PO of the 420 also had some sort of critter with tiny little needle teeth that appeared to have a penchant for the doorlock knobs.
