W210 E320 Water pump R&R

I plan on tackeling this job in a week or two when the temp warms up a bit. In the meantime I would like to arm myself with as much knowledge as possible. I have made this repair once before on my 124 300E, Can anyone tell me how this repair differs? Is the tensioner set-up the same way on this car? Loosen the bolt (14mm ?) on front a few turns then turn the adjuster nut on top to loosen the belt? It looks as though I'm not going to need my Flex tool from Snap-on?!? can anyone offer any advice or suggestions? Or post the procedure order?

Thanks for your help.

If it is an M104 it should be very similar. I think most of the later engines use allen head bolts to attach the pump to the block, so the Snap-On flex won't work. A ball-end socket driver serves the same purpose.

104 engine, from 1994 on, use a tensioning device with internal dampner.
Use a breaker bar and socket (15mm i think?) fit onto tensioner pully and rotate clockwise, remove belt.
you will need to remove power steering pump and swing it to the side.
bolts are 6mm internal hex. good luck

Well, the M104 in my 1995 C280 uses the old style, rubber bushing tensioner with the separate, external shock absorber. It should be relatively obvious which is in th ecar by observation.

Thanks for the help guys. This one doesn't sound quite as bad as my 103. I'll let you know. I'm waiting a few weeks until it warms up to start this project.

Since the belt and coolant have been recently changed, I guess I can just pull the belt and power steering pump out of the way and change it out. Correct ?

Trying to remember I think I put a small dab of sealant on the sealing ring on the 103. Just enough to hold the ring in place while I installed the WP. Any suggestions here?

Thanks again,

Just reread your post. Are you saying after I loosen the locking nut and turn the adjuster rod to use your technique above?

Thanks

The way I read it, Ozzy is saying you have a spring loaded tensioner, similar to the later V-6 & V-8 (M112 & M113) cars. There would be no tension adjuster. You just put a socket on the head of the bolt for the tensioner pulley and turn. I'm guessing you have the same type tensioner as your M103.

Thats weird , according to WIS as of sept 94 eng 104 in c class uses tensioner with internal dampner???
As Vince has stated, it's spring loaded, as you push on the breaker bar (clockwise) the tensioner rotates and releases tension on belt, whilst holding pressure on bar you can remove belt, then slowly rotate bar back.
To hold the seal in place just use a smear of petroleum jelly.

wow that's cool...I haven't even noticed the new style tensioner. So there is no locking nut and adjuster rod? Simply rotate the tensioner with a breaker bar ?

Yes, if indeed you have the tensioner described by Ozzy. All you need to do is look to find out what type of tensioner you have. It should be obvious.

I'll go check it out here in a few and let you know what I find. Sounds like this may be a better design than the previous version.

Thanks again for your help.

DrBrandini,

Since you doing this, can you post some pics and the procedure?
I would like to get a better idea if this is a job that I can do or take to my dealer.

Thanks and good luck.
