OK

et al,
A side benefit to testing the 02 sens output by removing the vac hose to the fuel regulator is that by seeing a change in the voltage of the 02 sensor when doing so also indicates that the fuel reg is working....when the vac hose is taken off , the fuel pressure goes up, so the engine naturally runs richer... so...if , with a good sensor, there is no change when putting the reg vac hose on and off, you can assume the reg is not regulating..[aside from other fuel pressure probs]

Sometimes hijacking can prove helpful. No lack of interest in your problem, just a lack of anything to contribute.

Problem fixed.

It looks like the issue was with the MAF. After a swap, from a generous guy in the neighborhood with a 95, the car smoothed out and runs great.

The mistery is, no fault codes pointed conclusively to the MAF being the problem. So I'd say, I'm more of a lucky guy than a deliberate problem solver.

Thanks for the help Mr. Dalton. Not just on this post alone, but for your responsed on all other posts with a similar nature. Where would we all be without Steve Brotherton's and your (and other's) valuable knowledge and the generousity with which you share it?

PS (avmech) Replaced harness two days after my first spark plug change on the newly bought car with ~100K That's when I understood why the car was such a bargain!

Very Good ..
Actually, if there are no vac leaks and the fuel presure is OK, rich/lean limit codes do point to MAF. I just recommend those test before getting into the MAF , as they will cause the same faults and are first check tips.
But in order to tell MAF, it is best to get ECU adaptation readings with a scanner, and even then , they are so hard to diagnose for sure, that the Techs use the same approach/solution as you .. change it with a known good one and see if the adaptation numbers come back towards normal [ or , as in your case , take it for a ride]
Thanks for the note of appreciation . As far as SB is concerned , I am moving near there soon and I was hoping to get a job there sweeping the floors....

Take it for a good ride and the ECU will relearn and make the proper adjustments as you put some new miles on it..
See ya
