My HVAC died (W124)

I was driving the car the other day (91 300E) and I started to smell something burning in the car but nothing went wrong and the smell was not that powerful. I thought it was coming from outside somewhere. Anyway a few days later my HVAC stopped working completely. Any suggestions as to what it could be?
