1. Car - 1986 Mercedes 300E
2. Automatic 4 speed 3. Dealer 4. Cost - $600 + $53 + $25 (had someone bring it over) Houston, TX/Milton Motors Used and New European Parts 5. With new trans fluid, I havent really been able to run the car around a lot, but I did notice when I drove it around the block that it slips just a little when going from 1st to 2nd gear. Overall the tranny is in good shape. I also have not been able to reach the top 4 bolts on it. I put the tranny on myself. I would not recommend it though. The work is out of this world!! Dj Cee

1. Car -420SEL
2. 4 speed automatic 3. Used transmission from a guy in Texas - had about 60,000 miles on it. Paid $600 for trans. -$150 for shipping. Another $60 for fluid and filter. Installed it myself - priceless! 4. Installed the transmission 2 years ago and, so far, no big problems. I have a problem with upshift when the car is cold - but only the one time. Seems like there is not enough pressure to cause it to shift up. Otherwise it runs great. |

I remember changing out 3 transmissions in 1 weekend, in my garage, by myself, car on jack-stands. I had 1 bad one that wouldn't upshift, and tried 2 others. The second donor worked. Lots of fun, believe me. Worst part was unbolting/bolting up the torque converter to the flexplate, and of course, man-handling these bulky things into position. Second time round, a 76' 450SE, no reverse. I had a donor auto trans, but this time I 'rented' my friend's commercial lift/bay. He helped me out some, when not busy, so we tried changing the valve body, but no go, so removed the old and put in the 'new', with original valve body. Problem was solved in about 7 hours, and $350.00 (CDN) for his time and use of his hoist/bay. 2. Transmission type - all were automatics 3. Dealer or aftermarket replacememnt - all 'donors' from wrecks 4. Cost - I think the donors for the old gals were less than $100.00, and the '77 450SEL was $300.00 (CDN), but I also used the camshafts, and the wiring harness went into my streetrod. 5. End Result - the 2 cars both shifted fine and continued to do so until sold.

It looks like I will be doing one on my 560SL. I overhaul these myself. I dont recomend this for the average DIYer. I have done a lot of automatics but never an MB. I will let you know how it works.

Yes. Everything checks out. It only does this when the engine reaches about 65-70 deg.c (not fully warmed up) and only after my initial start of the day. Does it about 1 1/2 miles from initial start-up.
Sorry about your trans. I thought for sure it would be the shifter bushings and you would get off easy. |

1989 260E, 447,000K, owned since 1991 when I bought it with 30,000Km on the clock.
Still with the original tranmission in place, never been removed from the car. I only replaced the vacuum modulator some 5 years ago. |
