Dead MB 300E 1988

Well, dear friends I was driving down the street and the car died on me.
After several unsucessful tries to restart, I gave up.
I wanted to run the diagnostics codes for the car.
Do I need to buy one of these $500 scanners or I can do it some other way?
How about the codes? where can I find a list of them?
I do not hear the fuel pump running so I am guessing a fule pump relay??
thanks in advance

You can buy a $500 scanner, but it won't work on your car.

If you dont hear the fuel pumps run when you turn the key on, then that is probably your problem.

I understand that you can get the trouble codes with a simple 12v tester ( the kind with a light bulb and wire). Apparantly there is a way to connect the tester to the diagnostic port next to the battery and ground various pins to read the different systems (ABS, SRS, ECU). Each system will pulse 12v, use the tester to read the pulses. Count out the number of pulses, then lookup in the technical specs to determine what the counts means. Please let me know if you figure out exactly how to do this, as I am clearly unsure and would like to do it myself.

btw, on my 89 300te, you will not hear the fuel pump unless you turn over the engine. The pump will remain on for a couple seconds after you stop cranking the engine as long as you leave the key in the 'on' position.

Okay, here's how I checked for trouble codes:
1. Put the ignition in the "on" position (With the engine not running)
2. Find the diagnostic port just in front of the battery. it has a small lid and inside there are a bunch or numbered pins.
3. Take a small piece of wire and ground the #3 pin to the chassis for 2-4 seconds.
4. Remove the wire. In a couple of seconds the red LED will start to blink.
5. Count the number of blinks.
6. Lookup in the service manual (or google) for the cross-reference table that tells you what error message is correlated with the number of blinks.
7. You can also reset the check-engine light by grounding the #3 pin for several seconds.

They are in the 124 MB CD set
From the Engine Manual // Combustion Manual // 07.3 Mechanical/electronic gasoline injection system (KE injection) // 0121 Testing electrical components of KE injection system...

0121 Testing electrical components of KE injection system covers 107's-124's-126's & 201's. (only difference -component location and a few notes)

Read this thread:
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=116076&highlight=84%25+duty+cycle
It contains code reading instructions...
But if your car is not California there will be no push button switch at X92

I was inspecting the fuel pump realy and I found that it looks like new.
The contacts are shinny and in very good condition.
Is there any way to test the relay?
thanks
