pesuazo is right. You don't need to remove the center nut. The rotor may appear to be held on by the nut, but if you look closer there is a seam around the hub where the rotor meets it. It is likely filled with rust. Try cleaning it with a steel brush and some penetrating oil. Some persuasion with a hammer should coax it off.
I think I rigged up a puller with a metal bar and a pair of c-clamps once to pull a stubborn rotor. You are almost there!

Well..............I finally have both rear rotors off. After doing so, I found a long spring, having a straight shaft with coiled ends, loose in the driver's side rotor, and the other side had the same spring but, it was broken. Previous to me taking the rotors off, the parking brake worked fine. Even depressing one click, allowed the brake to hold.
What are these springs & how critical are they. Will I still be safe driving? -Thanx! |

Vehicle Stuck In Garage!!!!!!!! Help!!!!!!!
Can anyone advise me as how critical the spring I mentioned is? The parking brake & braking system worked fine before I removed the rotors. I don't want to reassemble the rotors if it is important.
-Thanx! |

Well, if I understand you correctly, this spring serves to bring back the parking brake shoes back to their resting position (at least on my 92 300TE). Besides not being able to fulfill that function a broken spring may sratch inside the rotor and may eventually be torn and destroy the parking brake assembly. This is probably not a big saftey issue, but still I would replace the spring with new ones. I am not sure whether it is available individually. The whole parking brake assemby for my 300TE was around 28$. Good luck, Bruno

when I put on my wheels the lugs were too long and broke a couple of springs inside the rear discs for the parking brakes. I put in shorter lugs and had this nasty squeeling that would come and go.
I finally pulled the rear discs off, and found the broken springs. went to the dealer, bought the springs, and fixed it myself for under $5.00. the lugs hit the springs because they were too long and snapped them off. They werent too hard to put on, these springs I replaced basically held the parking brake shoes in position against the back of the hub. without them they would flex out towards the outside of the car. You may have broken some other kind of spring in there. My suggestion, go to the dealer, buy the springs that are broken and put new ones in. Alon

...stuck In My Garage!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ashman,
I went to the dealership yesterday to order the spring replacement. He suggested I replace both springs on each side. The small spring located beneath the brake adjustment is still in place so, I see where it goes. The spring that has the straight shaft with the Coiled section on each end, is the spring that was loose inside of the rotor. I am not sure where it would be attached. Can you advise or if you, OR ANYONE has a picture of the where it fits, it would help me TREMENDOUSLY! -Thanx! |
