Thanks everyone for the tips and advice, i really appreciate it. i plan to tackle replacing the alternator (just got a new battery, since sears said the old one was dead...only 25 bucks because of a pro-rated warranty) this weekend.

$60 to rebuild my bosch 65amp from the 300sd
cash and drop off only sorry no CC no ship
and he did it in one hour!!!!!

Did he do anything besides replace the regulator/brush unit?
