M119 Air Pump
Hi guys... the air injection pump on my 500E has died (completely). I don't want to spend the $1800US on a new one, so want to get rid of it. In the UK we don't need that pump anyway.
Looking at the belt run diagrams, I can see there's a version of the M119 without the airpump and with a guide pulley in there. Has anyone got a parts manual to dig the part number out for me? My MB place can't find it without the VIN of a car with the pulley ![]() Thanks in advance!

My mechanic tells me that the pumps themselves never really break. He's never replaced one.
Instead, the bearings in the pulley go bad. The dealers here in the U.S. sell a rebuild kit for about $250-ish

Mine's really broken... lots of bits everywhere. We've stripped it and it's dead.
Just need to find the p/n for this guide pulley ![]()

Mine's making a nasty noise at startup when engaged. I dont' want to spend the $250 for a repair. I would also like to disconnect mine.
Did you ever get P/N to replace it with a pulley?

Hi guys, mine makes an annoying noise when engaged as well. So you guys say the rebuild kit is 250? How hard it is to rebuild it? I mean it’s pretty tight in there, so what’s the procedure?
So here in the US.....does the engine NEED the air pump? Like the original poster mentioned, can it be bypassed? I would think that would require a shorter belt or some kind of dummy pully. Can it be done? |

I don't think the noise is coming from the pulley. The pumps are just noisey.
When the pulley goes out, you'll know it. The car will be basically inoperable. It will make a horrible screeching noise, as if you were choking a rooster. I drove mine when the pulley bearing was on its way out, and is I drove through a supermarket parking lot, people were putting their hands over their ears. By the time I finally arrive at my tech's shop, the pulley was emitting a burning smell. The pulley bearing was basically fried, and I really should've had the car towed. When the new pulley was installed, the pump was still as noisey as it was before.
