Fuel Gauge Light Flashing?

On two occasions recently my '97 S500 (W140) fuel gauge light began flashing, but the fuel level was barely below where the warning light would come on. There is nothing in the manual about this flashing, and I have seen nothing in the forum about why it would flash or whether it is even supposed to do so. Both times it happened when the car was sitting and idling. Once it stopped about a minute after I started driving and the other time I turned the car off and restarted and the light was just on steadily, with no flashing after that. Anyone know what the flashing means, or if it is even supposed to do this?

I'd check it for codes. On newer cars it means a leak in the evap system or loose gas cap.
