300e stalls but with a twist

I've read at least 50 threads about 300e's stalling as soon as they warm up. My 91 starts fine but as soon as it's warm it will stall unless you leave it in park - even then most times. I noticed while working on it that during one episode the gas gauge bottomed out to empty. I put a few gallons in it and it went back to over 1/2 tank where it was to begin with. A fluke? Is this a tell-tale sign to anyone out there? No abs light or any other signs and this condition came on all at once. The car runs great above about 1800 rpms but will stall until it refuses to start until it cools down completly. OVP relay? I hate to start throwing money at this with out an educated opinion. One other thing - the muffler fell off at the weld and I drove it without one for a few weeks. Could this be messing with a sensor? The new one is on the way from fastlane. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks, Andy

Three things:
Replace your cap, rotor and the torx bolt that secures the rotor driver to the camshaft. You'll need a T30 torx key to get it out. Been through this one before.

All these things are new already. I did cap, rotor, wires and plugs about 4 months ago. Thanks

Yes, but did you inspect the torx bolt in the center of the rotor driver? Everything on mine looked good until I realized there was a tiny bit of play in the rotor and found the cracked bolt at the back. Identical symptoms too. Differential diagnosis would be fuel filter.

Keep a can of quick-start in the trunk. When it next stalls take off the air filter and shoot starting fluid into the throttle body. Crank the engine and see if it kicks a little. If so then you've isolated it to the fuel system, otherwise you've isolated the problem to the ignition system.
