My seat belt extender stopped working this morning on my 1995 S500 Coupe. The driver side extended then retracted as normal, then my daughter got into the pasenger side, the extender came out, she buckeled in then nothing. The arm stayed extended. I had her open and close the door, unbuckle and rebuckle, but nothing helped. I turned the engine off and on, now the driver side does not work at all. Like a fuse went out. I went into the trunk and pulled fuse #7, it was good. Any ideas? Thanks, Steve

I'm not sure on how similar my coupe is to yours but on mine neither side worked. On the drivers side a microswitch in the seatbelt latch failed. On the passenger side a control module located behind the interior rear side panel ( where the rear door panel would normaly be )failed.

You need the wiring schematic from the service cd's to understand the system.
The control module I switched from side to side and the passenger side extender started working. I cut the duff module open and found that moisture corrosion had rusted the spring on a contact coil. I replaced the spring with one from a generic automotive relay (aftermarket headlight relay, electric fan, etc.) and epoxied the case back together. I re-installed back into the original location to confirm it worked. My passenger side now worked and I knew the drivers side module was good. Since I now knew the drivers side module was good I checked for lack of signal to it. I diagnosed the seatbelt switch with a wiring schematic from the service cd and multimeter. The seat belt receiver can be disassembled. It was a matter of a contact tab that had gotten hot and smoldered it's way into the plastic until it no longer made contact. I fixed the plastic with epoxy, re-installed the tab and re-assembled. Two years later my extenders still work fine. Jorg |

This is one of those things that has magically healed itself in my car, 1991 300CE. The drivers side extender would extend but not retract. You can just gently but firmly push it back in. I would then just remember to buckle up before starting the car. Of course I would sometimes forget and have to push it back in. Then sure enough after a week or two, I'd forget to buckle up first and it would extend but, Viola!, clip in the seat belt and it retracts! Been fine for the past year.
Similarily, my fuel tank needle was jumping erratically around the 1/2 tank mark. My habit was to not fill the tank completely, usually empty to 1/2 full. I then started to keep the tank between 3/8 to full and no more jumpy needle. glenmore 1991 300CE |
