I'm not familiar with your transmission, but generally there is a vacuum hose running to the modulator, at least there is on newer models. If you can find a vac hose attaching the tranny somewhere, that would likely be the modulator. Also check for vac leaks, often the source for hard shifts.

Haynes publishes a repair manual (63030) (698) for 350SL & 450SL 1971 thru 1980. Perhaps the information you need is in there.

Thank you BusyBenz.
I have the Haynes repair manual (63030) (698) for 350SL & 450SL 1971 thru 1980. But I cant find any of the modulator pressure adjust. The manual refer
to the vacuum modulator line, but no pictures , drawing og other info.
The manual are for 3 speed trans. I have a 4 speed.

The modulator is located on the rear passenger side, by the transmission tail. If it’s the original modulator it will have a steel vacuum line with a banjo fitting.

That is the modulator; the replacement will have a plastic cap with a nipple, to use it cut the steel line about 4 inches from the end then connect a rubber vacuum line from the nipple to the end of the line.

Make sure you have manifold vacuum at the steel line, about 14’’ to 22’’ HG. If not the line is plugged at the engine side

The adjustment screw on the original modulator is behind the banjo nut.

Thank you C32AMG.
Sorry may bad Englich.
You say: The adjustment screw on the original modulator is behind the banjo nut. I think this is a orginal modulator: I am a little confue about " Behind"
Are the adjust screw under the banjo nut? Most I remove the banjonut and
banjo and I will find the adjust screw inside the banjonut housing?
I think I most remove the big tunnel closing plate to do this?
And the adjust screw. Left or right to lower the pressure?

It sounds like you do not have much experience with adjusting automatic transmissions. Also, I believe your transmission is a 3-speed automatic, if it is like my 1972 350SL.

If your transmission is hard shifting, check the vacuum line. If it is OK and not broken then then I believe the modulator may have failed. If so, it needs to be replaced and not adjusted. It is important to adjust the new modulator properly. If you have no experience doing this you should take the car to a good mechanic who has experience with Mercedes transmissions.

Yes remove it; the adjustment screw is behind the bolt. CCW Left = less, CW right = more. Read my above post, check for vacuum and you should change the modulator, it looks like the original one, 35years old.

Hi 230/8 and C 32AMG
My 350 SL 1971 are indeed a 4 speed. (Picture)
In June 1972 they put a 3 speed trans in the car.
On my W 126 the was a T piece for adjust the pressure. I adjust this trans in 2 minutes with great success. So ,I will try the W 107 also.
Thank you
Arvid
