Rebuilt E55
Would this be a good buy, 2001 E55 Salvaged, fully rebuilt 25K miles for 17K$
I know the resale value would be very low but as a driver would it be worth it or would it just be a better idea to spend 10K more for a higher mile model with a clean title. just wondering.the exact website is http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?car_id=181976114&dealer_id=52741678&car_year=2001&make=MB&distance=0&lang=en&max_price=22000&model=E55&end_year=2006&min_price=1&certified=&address=10001&search_type=both&advanced=&start_year=1981&isp=y&cardist=1097 |

Firstly since the new W211 E55's have come out with 470hp vs 350? or so, I would imagin the W210 E55's resale value should be dropping.
If you are going to buy an E55 spend the money and get a nice car and enjoy it. I wouldn't touch that car. For $17k buy a nice E500.

Salvage title cars are bad news.

Advice
Offer $14k if they accept the offer- buy it!!!
You will never get any better deal. The title is not that much of an issue if car was repaired properly. Do not listen to people drivin' cars with 'clean' title and tons of bondo all over. Carfax is a scam- if the accident was never claimed you will never know if the car you r buying is 'clean' or not. Most people are buying titles, not cars... The mentality seems to be-"I am buying, but at the same time I am already thinking of sale..." It's like buying a label, not the actual wear.

Stay away unless you really know what you're doing.
In general you can't get anything but liability coverage on a salvage title car. If something happens to the car whether or not it's your fault, you might not get worthwhile compensation. I knowingly bought a salvage title car because I knew the seller personally and I knew he had checked it throughly, and the salvage title was issued because the car was abandoned at a body shop after a fender bender (owner, shop and insurance couldn't agree to clear it). The problems continue when you want to get rid of it. Sixto 95 S420 87 300SDL |

Insurance companies are far from stupid and with such a new car they would have fixed it if the damage was less then the book value. So what is the book value on a clean 01 E55 with low miles? High $20k's? Lets say $27k for arguments sake. So the insurance company wrote it off becuase the damage was greater then $27k and then sold it at an auction. Some hack job comes along buys it and another smashed up W210 and all of a sudden you have a car that looks decent but is a pos death trap.
$8k for totaled E55 + $4k and some welding later. If they are selling it for $17k they are making money on it somewhere.

if you know the previous owner, then perhaps you might have some other information that would spur you to buy it.
one of the techs at 2002AD had his car salvaged by insurance for a rear ding. he bought the car back from them and fixed it and is still driving it to this day as far as i know. of course when you are talking about a 1973 BMW 2002 whose value is probably less than $4000, its easier to just total the car and pay out vs fixing it from an insurance point of view.
