Sunroof doesn't open ???

My '89 300TE sunroof doesn't open up or back, but the motor runs. When it failed it was in the open position. I was able to close it by manually cranking it closed. What can I expect to be the problem? Is this a DIY thing or a shop job. Many thanks in advance. Dennis
