1983 380 SL valve guide?
I keep coming up with questions about this job. I am hoping to avoid the removal of the driver side head in order to inspect the valve guide seal and guide for that matter. While trying to remove the spring using a top side spring compressor tool, I compress the spring enough to be able to move the valve down into the cylinder approx 1/2 inch, while not being able to loosen and remove the keepers I notice that when I push down on the valve the cylinder press does not drop. Is 1/2 inch downward movement on the valve not enought o release the 180 psi I have pushing up on the valves. I am nervous about continuing the effort to remove the keeper when I am not sure how the pressure is not being released into the intake manifold when I push down on the valve. From my past days of rebuilding engines I remember the valve seat was not deep, Am I missing something? At the same time when I depress the valve on the pressure gauge contraption being used to pressure up the cylinder and left in place attached to the compressor in case the press should start dropping, it releases the press and you hear the discharge. What am I doing wrong? other than not taking the car to a pro.

dropping the valve?
If you really move the valve down 1/2 inch--it will be close to wide open! Is it possible you are simply moving the spring and keeper down the valve stem?

I am not sure of anything at this point, logic will tell me that the valve is not moving down otherwise the pressure would release. I am answering my own question but when I compress the spring I can see the valve move down when I try and release the keepers which are not budging. I'll keep messing with it and see what happens.

valve moving?
Are you SURE--like REAL REAL SURE you are pushing on the correct valve. For certain, if you open a valve (it goes down) it WILL release the air inside the cylinder as sure as the sun rises each day.

valve stem seals
Hi Iwould first make sure the cylinder up is in the firing position, with the air in the cyl rap down on the top of the valve this will unseat the keeper and you will find it easier to remove, just do not hit it to the point were the keeper goes out just enough to loosen it,remember its been in there for a while.joeym

sorry to say yes u are missing something, and i think u are lucky that the keepes did not fall out and the valve droped...I bet you that the contraption that you usedhad its valve still stuk in the hose,so iyou put 180 psi on the hose to the spark plug hole, but not into the hole.Or as Kebowers sayes are u using the right cylinder

I would check your air supply you may have a check valve in it
This is used on compression gauges lots of people use the fitting to fit the spark plug hole and have pipe fitting on the other end to hook to the air supply The problem arises when the compession tool is made to let air out of cylinder not in Then their is a relieve button to drop the air out Check to make sure you have air coming out of the fitting that goes into the spark plug hole Seen this happen Easy misake when in a rush to get done
