LARRY:Does Freon have a shelf live?

My neighbor just gave me two 12oz. cans of [IG-LO] Du Pont freon-12. He had it in his garage for 8 years and does not know long his brother had it.Is this company still in business,i would like to find out the age of this stuff.

If the can is still pressurized it should be just fine. If the pressure on the inside is greater than on the outside, nothing can get in, and the freon itself doesn't deteriorate with age.

I have a few cans that are 10 to 15 years old. They seem to be getting a bit lighter every year.

Well, it seems to last for several decades in service without deterioration, In the can, a century?
