How to set timing - 420SEL ?

First off - is the timing even adjustable on an '89 420SEL ? Undoing the distributor's pinch bolt and moving the distributor one way or the other seemed to have no effect from what I saw using the timing light. Or am I missing something ? Is there a FAQ on the subject anywhere ?
