its too hot! A.C problems 87' 300e
ok i drive a stock 1987 300e ( w124 ) and when i turn on the lower button ( the fan which is not filled in , the weaker setting) it comes on usually when driving speeds above 10 mph. if not, it just doesn't work. it also isn't that cold. how cold is it supposed to get? and when i press the button for the strongest setting it works for a while ( only at higher speeds eg. 40 mph and up ) but even after a while it turns off by itself.
additional failure?? even when the air is turned off, and the windows closed, and i start driving , i feel a faint air coming through the air openings for the ac/heat. and when the ac is working, it comes out pretty weak on the left side ( drivers side, us model ) and the last question what is the usual cost to replace the cabin air filters? there are 3 correct?

I'm having the same problem with my 87 300E. The guy I bougt it from must have charged the system up right before he sold it, it was freezing on the freeway and did just OK below 40 MPH. Recently (2 months after purchase) it doesn't even do good on the freeway. I removed the low side cap to try and put more freon (134) and noticed that there was dye around the low side valve, so someone knew there was a problem with it before!
Anyway, is the fan working properly? I believe there are two settings. If not, I think it's the #7 fuse, try replacing it as there could be some corrosion between the fuse and contacts. In my case, I believe the problem is bigger and I'll have to have it diagnosed professionally. |

oh and an additional question, my car is about to be due for an oil change and i want to get synthetic. i want to get the best out there possible for my car, a lot of people like mobil 1, but what weight should i use? my engine was rebuilt 5k miles ago and heads were polished so i doubt there will be any leaks anywhere.

As far as the fan, you should hear it cycle two speeds, esp. when the engine is warm and the a/c is on, maybe after you pick up your mobil 1. I use 15w50, found a great deal at WalMart in the gallon jugs. I also use the Mercedes oil filter from the dealer, they're not too expensive. What part of the country are you in?
