"Euro configuring" the S203 and R170

I have a 2001 US Spec R170 SLK230 and a 2002 US Spec S203 C320. Now, I am planning to move to Europe, and plan to take the cars with me. In the European State Inspection, they do not like those cruising lights. Especially they do not like the continuously illuminated front blinkers.

I visited the local dealer today to see if they can reprogram the car with "Euro settings". (I work in IT business, which makes me think computer is the resolution to everything ) Unfortunately, they said this is not possible.

The local dealer said changing the headlight logic would require hardware changes. They talked about changing the headlight logic unit (SAM?) or the light switch.

I also asked if they can reprogram the radio to accept even frequencies (95.0, 95.2, 95.6,...). They said this is not possible and will require replacing the radio.

Honestly, sounds difficult to believe that these things can not be set programmatically... Please advise how to get my cars "Euro configured".

Thumbs up

Keep in mind that the US dealerships are operating on the premise that the vehicle is being operated under our regulations. Once you arrive in Europe I would imagine that you will have very little difficulty geting someone to re-code the appropriate control modules.

Perhaps you can locate an independent repair facility in your area that has the factory scantool. You may discover that somebody will help ready your vehicle for the arrival into Europe.

PS: Not certain on physical differences with control modules, lighting assemblies etc. Check with the country/state you are relocating to and see what restrictions apply to foreign vehicles.

I wish I would get there at some point. When I was younger, my family lived not too far away from the Castle. That is a beautiful area. Unfortunately, the area where I will be relocating will have about 80F lower temperature than my current neighborhood and nothing like the Neuschwanstein

The radio station spacing is unit specific, although you will still be able to manually tune the radio stations.

As for the lighting, replacement of the corner marker bulb holder and the turn signal relay might do the trick, since they use a single filament bulb (turn signal only). The relay replacement will likely prevent a constant burned out bulb warning.

Cruising lights?

I have never seen this term before but if you are referring to the daytime running lights, this function, at least in the 203, is set up in the dashboard menus using the steering wheel buttons.
