Any differance in 300E & 500E spare tire bucket?

My '92 500E is missing the spare tire hold-down bucket and I found one at a pick and pull from a late 80's 300E but when I tried to install it the snout wouldn't reach all the way to the screw on the trunk floor. Is there a difference between the two models?
