URGENT HELP NEEDED...how to remove clip from rear axle - PeachParts Mercedes-Benz Forum

HELP...the rear axle on the passenger side needs to be replaced. I'm at the point where I need to remove that clip holding the axle in. How do I get that out? I see the little ring hole. Do I just make a pulling tool and pull that out or does that need to slide out somewhere?

The car is a 1979 300D.

just pull straight back. it will rotate on you, you just have
to be persistent. i use a small hook tool from cobalt. it will
snap out, it's just a c-clip, but can be a pain. sometimes
getting it back in can be a challenge too.

Thanks...I made a small hook out of a coat hanger and yanked it out. Took me an hours to get it out. I though it slides out somewhere, but when I looked in there with a flash light I realized that it's only coming out one way...straight out.

Looks like it'll be a challenge to get it back on...damn...any advice?

errr...If I remember from the last time, I did my best to line it up/get it started just a touch so I could use a suitable punch/swift blow w/ a modest hammer.

Might go flying on you once or twice so be careful and watch where it heads off to;-)

i haven't tried jonathan's method, but he knows more
about these cars than i do that's for sure. i've done this
two or three times only, but as i recall, a decent pair of
of long nose needle pliers did the trick. again, took several
tries. if you can get it started, some persuasion with a
hammer and drift would probably do it. good luck.

Thanks again guys. I used a long nose pliers and a screwdriver. I used the long nose pliers to keep the C-clamp in place, then I used the screwdriver to guide the C-clamp into the grooves. Once that was in, I used the screwdriver and long nose pliers to push the clamp in.
