Hello,

I have recently had a problm with my 1989 300SE. When I came to a stop after driving, the car would just cut out.
This happend two or three times per journey, even on a short journey.
All of a sudden, the problem just stopped.

I have decided it was down to the wet weather. I think I must have driven through a large amount of water, and got something wet. I presume whatever I got wet has dryed out.

I'm just wondering if anybody can confirm this is correct. I didn't do anything to cure the problem, it just stopped.

Will it be the electrics that got wet, or a flter of some kind?

Thanks

I haven't replaced it since I've owned the car (about 5,000 miles).

Should I need to replace it?

Thanks

Shot in the dark

Excuse my buttinski...

I don't know a thing about your model, but if you do a search on this site for threads regarding intermittent stall on 300Es, you might find something applicable to your situation. For what little it's worth, I've contributed some thoughts on the subject of intermittent stall on at least one thread, maybe two, related to the 124. Search for my username (disregard the thread where I went on a rant, please!) and you'll find the thread where I posted a whole list of things that my tech told me might cause intermittent stall in a 300E - some of those things might apply to your model. Not knowing more than what you wrote, my intuition is telling me that your fuel pump relay may giving up the ghost. My car stalled out, started, stalled out a number of times before it finally refused to start again. Happened in a nasty place, too.

300 3 stall after wash

my 300 e is acting the same way but only after i washed the motor. i'm in the process of finding a small oil leak and needed things clean. after the car warmed up it started running rough then just quit, BUT bucked and snorted when i tried to restart it. it finally did restart and at home i took everything apart and let it dry out. cap, rotor, wires and such. it was also a warm day. it has not done it since. the problem with my car that seems unusual is the bucking and snorting, like being out of time.

It could be a wide range of things but, a common problem and easy thing to check is the OVP fuse. It is the red top on silver, tall and rectangular with, 10 amp red fuse on top. However, even if the fuse is good. The OVP relay may be bad especially, if is an older car. However for 0.05 for blade fuse. It is worth checking it anyways. Takes about a minute.

ovp relay

when i first got my car the 10amp fuse on top of the relay was blown, it would only start cold after a lot of cranking. but once running it seemed to be fine. i replaced the fuse and that problem went away. in retrospect it did cause me to buy the car really cheap

And if you have ASR, that being lit is also an indication to suspect OVR fault.

The faulty relays seem to be the ones made by "Siemens"
of Austria. They are stamped on the side.
